Machray, Robert. The Night Side of London. Illustrated by Tom Browne. London: John MacQueen. 1902.
Tom Browne's interest in the destitute extended beyond the comics. This ink-wash illustration stands as Browne’s statement about the haves and have-nots in Edwardian London; it does not reflect any opinion expressed by author Robert Machray in the chapter of his The Night Side of London which it ostensibly illustrates (chapter 11). Furthermore, the name Browne gives to the club on this picture, Bounder’s Club, echoes the name Bounderby, the rich and callous businessman in Dickens’s industrial novel Hard Times (1854).
